Benjamin Braddock, the lead character of The Graduate directed by Mike Nichols an average suburban kid growing up in the sixties had his entire life ahead of him; but his lack of care throughout his life held him back from moving on and living the life of a normal college graduate. Ben slides through life, emotionless, careless about his future, and what others think of him. When Mrs. Robinson comes into his life, Ben's feelings change slightly and Mrs. Robinson becomes the only person able to make him express anger, fear, and rebellion.

Ben is first showed alone on an airplane, with everyone around him looking as nostalgic as he. He is not centered on the screen which gives the impression that he feels out of places and is indifferent about going home after graduating from college. Also, while Ben is in the airport standing on the moving walkway, he is not centered nor with anyone but everyone seems to be moving past him while he stands emotionless slowly moving down the walkway. He is being carried down the walkway much as he is carried through life. Ben does not put time and effort into his future which is present during his summer months which consisted of lying in his pool and drinking beer.
