The Growth Of The Suburbs

In "The Suburban Century Begins", William Schneider demonstrates the growth of the suburbs and how their influence is impacting political choices on the national and local levels. However, in doing so, Schneider has unfairly characterized suburban life and has unnecessarily turned the middle class citizen into a symbol of greed and self interest to drive home his points.
The "suburban century begins" reflects the rise in population and subsequent political power of suburbs. It follows rural dominance that occurred until 1920. Schneider never adequately defines what he means when he states that suburbs are stressful and even seems to refute his own hypothesis when he points out that suburban stress had not produced any large-scale countermovement back to the cities or out to the countryside.
The prevailing imperative of suburban life is security, both economic and physical. The suburban resident values home ownership and the ability to protect the home by building walls around homes and eventually around the entire community that the house is a part of. Schneider then makes a very weak argument that somehow a sense of security has led to a lack of social consensus and, because there is no social consensus, we cannot achieve a political consensus to implement the social consensus.
