The original Klan was organized in Tennessee in 1865 by former Confederate army officer Jonathan B Frost, he gave their society a name adapted from the Greek word kuklos. The Klan attempted to destroy the reconstructed governments that came into power in the southern states in 1867. The Klan was vary committed to white supremacy, and they didn’t like the idea of a black person being as equal as them. Klansmen terrorized public officials and blacks, and burned crosses near the homes of those they wanted to scare. When such tactics failed, their victims were sometimes beat, mutilated, or murdered. After 1921 the Klan grew rapidly in membership and influence, “In a six month period from 1920 to October 1921 the Klan added 100,000 new members, And made one and a half million dollars from the sale of robes, ritual equipment and other paraphernalia.” It was only ten dollars for a membership. “A 1924 estimate of its membership was as high as 3 million.”
In 1944 the Klan formally split up when it was unable to pay taxes owed the federal government. After World War II, widespread public sentiment developed for the suppression of the organization. It broke down into numerous, independent units.
The Klan opposed the civil rights movement that gained force in the late 1950s, The Klan again rose up, and was believed to be involved in many incidents of racial violence.
