The Klan was initially started by former confederates in the wake of the American Civil War as a reaction against the 'Radical Republicans' and their attempt to integrate the former black slaves in the mainstream of American life. At the time Mr. Evans wrote "The Klan's Fight..." in 1926, the Klan movement was in its second phase in which it had included the Jews, Roman Catholics, socialists and communists as its targets in addition to the blacks. Its major aim in this period was to curtail immigration and to pressurize the government to pass stringent laws against immigration of non-Protestant whites. The Klan article reflects most of these aims while attempting to paint the old-stock, Nordic Americans (the majority) as the victims.
