Homosexuality and lesbianism is nothing new. Indeed, there is wide spread historical evidence, especially in ancient Greek literature, that people of the same-gender had sexual relationships: "Homosexuality...was not...ridiculous, unless it was coupled with effeminacy." (Beye, p. 106) Over time, though, society began to frown on homosexuality and lesbianism since marriage became one of the fundamental organizing principles of human society. Looking at the issue and the various arguments put forth by proponents and opponents alike, it appears that perhaps the whole debate is really driven by perhaps a fear that the move to allow same-sex marriages will lead to completely changing society as we have always known it.

Opponents of same-sex marriages argue that: homosexual acts are immoral; society has an interest in promoting heterosexual marriages as the environment for child bearing and rearing; same-sex relationships are less stable; and same-sex couples are open to greater health risks. Proponents of the issue, on the other hand, reason that prohibiting same-sex marriage is discriminatory and restrictive of freedom of choice. In addition, they also argue that allowing same-sex marriage could benefit individuals, children, and society in the same manner as heterosexual marriages (BBCi, Mar. 2004).
