My name is Georgia Totto O’Keefe, the second child of Francis and Ida O’Keefe. I was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin on November 15, 1887. I am of Irish, Hungarian, and Dutch descent.
With five other siblings, I always craved attention and praise from my parents, and always wanted to be thought pretty. As a result of coming from such a large family, I acquired a sense of maturity and independence very early in my life. I first attended the Sacred Heart Academy, a Roman Catholic convent school on the outskirts of Madison, Wisconsin, and then moved on to Chatham Episcopal Institute in the fall of 1903. Despite my studies at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League of New York, the University of Virginia, and Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York, I was never able to remain at one institution long enough to receive an academic degree.
