In 1619, on the shores of Virginia near the city of Jamestown the very first blacks arrived thus starting the long two and half centuries of slavery. Back in the colonial period in the United States, slavery was an elaborate system in which Europeans sailed down to Africa and took men, women and children from their homelands to do their unlawful bidding.

existed. At an early age in life, he was content and enjoyed the little things that made boys happy while living with his grandparents. Unbeknownst to him, his blissful childhood was abruptly taken from him at too early of an age because his life was inside the slave system. Frederick was introduced the hard way to the realities and depths of how evil this system really was. Frederick yearned to be back with his grandparents but couldn't. At such an early and impressionable age his little body and mind had gone through so many trials.
His understanding of being a slave and first experiences was at Col. Edward Lloyd's plantation. There he became accustomed to the slave rules and how the place was organized and managed. There were three different social rankings or classes within the system: the slaveholders, the overseers and then the slaves. Frederick was the property of Col. Lloyd. Captain Anthony was under Col. spaces. If during the week they overslept because of the long days that they had, the slaves would get whipped. Whipping slaves for oversleeping was one of the most common occurrences on the plantation.
Frederick's experiences at the plantation led him to want to know why slavery existed, why it was happening and what was the cause and basis for it. He did find out that there were exceptions to slavery and not all black people were slaves, nor all white people were slaveholders or masters. At an early age this was very baffling to him and he struggled with this idea of slavery and how it came to be.
