In the essay “ Enclosed. Encyclopedic. Endured: The Mall of America” the author David Guterson describes the mall as a “…monstrous hallucination…”(211). Is the mall nothing more than an oversized shopping center, designed to look extravagant and patriotic? Thousands of visitors go to the mall to get lost in its 4.2 million square feet of floor space. They wander around aimlessly looking for direction but find that the straight way was lost and the YOU ARE HERE landmarks on the map kiosks referred to nothing in particular (Guterson 211). “Getting lost, feeling lost, [and] being lost--these states of mind are intentional features of the malls psychological terrain,” says Guterson (211). They designed an area with no clocks or windows, so the customer stays focused on shopping., however, these are typical of any shopping mall.
Guterson had an interview with the director of tourism, Colleen Hayes, and she explained the reason behind the patriotic red, white, and blue ribbons that decorate everything from the exterior to the smallest of souvenirs.
