“The Road Not Taken”

Robert Frost was a man of both few and many words. His eloquent writings attracted the attention of people all over the world. Many of his poems were written about New England, which is where he was raised and spent much of his life. “The Road Not Taken” was written to give the reader a picture of a forked road in New England. This is evident when Robert Frost writes “two roads diverged in a yellow wood.” (80) Where else in the world will someone find a yellow road, other than New England in autumn? Frost uses his natural aptitude for poetry to turn a terrible accident into a piece of astounding poetry.

I think that Frost is trying to tell us through “The Road Not Taken” that the path that we choose in life will always look better to us, that we have “the better claim” (80) with the path we chose. We may think of the path we did not choose, but we will never turn back because “knowing how way leads on to way,/I doubted if I should ever come back.” (81) One path in life is not just only one path, it leads on to many others. We will have many other opportunities in life to choose one path over another, but we will never have the opportunity to turn back to the one we did not take because more paths keep coming along. Life is full of decisions that we have to make, decisions that will affect the rest of our lives. But we should take “the one less traveled by” (81) because it will change our lives in a way we may not have expected.
