The Things I Carry

Tim O’Brien’s novel, The Things They Carried, represents that everything we carry has something to do with who we are and what we want to be seen as by others. I carry the things that represent who I am on the outside and the intangible things that others do not see on the inside. These things, both tangible and intangible, represent who I am.
On the outside, I carry my phone, keys, wallet, and a hat that rests on top of my head. These things provide everyday communication, transportation, identification, and satisfaction. The biggest weight I carry on my back though, is pressure. Not only from my parents but from my coaches and teachers because they want the best for me and will push me to my limits to make sure I get it. My parents want me to excel in everything I do and when I come up short, I feel as though I have embarrassed my parents and let them down. Every coach expects me to be one of the better kids on the team and be the goal scorer or playmaker. Ever since I was in kindergarten, I have always gotten good grades so teachers try and make sure that I thrive in the classroom and maintain good grades. But sometimes I just wish I didn’t have to try my best or make all the plays or answer every question the teacher asks and just have fun for once because when you’re a kid, everything you do is suppose to be fun.
