During the 1800’s, the leaders of the United States government had
a hard time recognizing that people who didn’t, look, act, or live the same
way were people too. The Native and African Americans suffered from law
discrimination, abuse, and culture clashes. The circumstances that
created these injustices were based on fear, as those in power structured
the government to protect only those of white heritage. The government
leaders went to great lengths to maintain a separation of status between
the Native and African Americans under the pretense of providing a safe and
secure haven for these minority groups.

reservations in which they could not leave without the permission of the
government agency created to oversee their safety. They had to live, hunt,
and survive living in a fixed boundary. The Medicine Lodge Treaty stated
that the plains tribes were confined on two reservations. The northern
reservation was in the Dakota Territory and southern was in Oklahoma.
Later in 1887, came the Dawes Act in which the government decided that the
Native Americans had to become farmers and land owners and give up the
Native American lifestyle totally. The Native Americans were coerced into
submission to provide a sense of security for the government leaders.
The African Americans were also stripped of their freedom and
equality by three laws, the Fugitive Slave Act, the 3/5ths Compromise, and
the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The Fugitive Slave Act ordered all citizens of
the United States to assist in the capture of slaves who escaped from their
