John locks the narrator in a “cell” to keep her locked away from society. John wants to have control over the narrator, just like the relationship between a prison warden and a prisoner. By locking the narrator in her room, John hopes to maintain the rigid gender hierarchy in his household. “Solitary confinement is occasionally used in most prison systems as a means to maintain prison order: as disciplinary punishment or as an administrative measure for inmates who are considered an escape risk or a risk to themselves or to prison order in general”(Smith). Another parallel can be drawn from the lack of communication because in prisons “communication with the outside world is minimal. Visits and phone calls are infrequent and severely restricted if allowed at all”(Smith).
