Introduction

The Yi (Choson) Dynasty was the final and longest of Korea's dynasties. Chinese cultural influences were extremely strong during this period, when Neo-Confucianism was adopted as the ideology of the state and society (Duncan, 2000). In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Korea was successfully invaded by Japan, resulting in a great loss of culture and power.
While it eventually recovered, foreign powers again threatened Korea in 1910, when it was annexed by Japan, ending the Choson Dynasty. The Choson dynasty is marked by the creation of the Korean alphabetic script, the establishment of the yangban, a new aristocracy, and a shift to ...

Korea changed many things and led to social and political reform (Haboush, 2002). Thus, the Choson Dynasty was established in 1392. This dynasty was one of the world's longest continuously ruling royal families, and stayed in power until about 1910.
The first two centuries of the Choson reign were peaceful and productive, and introduced many forms of new culture. During this era, many new types of ceramics and painting came about. A new alphabet for the Korean language was introduced, so that Koreans could write in their own language rather than using Chinese. A lot of the philosophy of government used in South Korea today developed during this era, changing the nation forever.
During the Choson Dynasty, Korea was able to ward off invasions by its long-time neighbors, Japan and Manchuria (Duncan, 2000). However, in the1700s, Korea was faced with a new challenge. European influence entered Korea, first through traders and Christian missionaries, and then by military force.
