There Is A Much Stronger Sense Of Tragic Closure At The Start Of The Burial At Thebes. Discuss.

Aristotle defines tragedy as “An imitation of an action that is serious, grave and of a certain magnitude”. “The Burial at Thebes” follows this typical tragedy plot. Heaney obeys Aristotle’s Poetics regarding tragedy. At the start of the play it is clear what the tragedy is going to be; we can see that the characters are setting themselves up for a fall.

The play starts in media res; in the middle of things. This creates a sense of urgency, which is reinforced throughout the first scene. This was very common in Greek theatre. It sets the audience up for a quick, hectic drama. Antigone and Ismene “enter hastily”, which makes the audience curious to their hurry.
