What was happening in this event: They were placing taxes on lead, paper, paint, glass, and tea, and provided legal ways to help collect taxes. In addition the Writs of Assistance which allowed officials the right to search anywhere for suspected smuggled good.

The reason behind the event: The original purpose of the Townshend duties was to raise revenue to help pay the cost of maintaining the army in North America. Townshend changed the purpose of the tax plan, however, and instead decided to use the revenue to pay some of the colonial governors and judges.
