A Comparison In The Use Of Dreams In "Doe Season" and "B. Wordsworth"

The short story "Doe Season" makes use of dream sequences to add dramatic intensity to its plot, while the short story "B. Wordsworth" makes use of dream-like qualities of narration and character to create a dream-like narrative texture to its episodic plot structure. How can this be true, one might ask, of any plot in fiction? After all, dreams do not have conventional, linear plot structures, but rather rely upon symbolism and streams of personal and cultural associations to give them meaning-perhaps one of the reasons people tend to find the recounted dreams of even close friends and family members quite boring! ...

The short story "Doe Hunting" is both a coming of age tale as well as an adventure story. According to a recent 2003 interview with David Michael Kaplan, about "Doe Hunting," a plot is always "a sequence of events." (Lovell, p.4) Word I.Q. agrees with Kaplan, defining plot as "according to Aristotle's Poetics, a plot in literature is the arrangement of incidents that (ideally) each follow plausibly from the other. The plot is like the chalk outline that guides the painter's brush. An example of the type of plot that follows these sorts of lines is the linear plot of development to be discerned within the pages of a bildungsroman novel." (Wordiq, 2004)
