Vietnam War Summary

The struggle of the Vietnam War was that North Vietnam wanted ownership of South Vietnam so that they would be a unified communist nation. The U.S. however wanted to prevent the domino effect of the further spread of communism, so the U.S. held true to the Truman Doctrine and aided the South Vietnamese leader, Diem. When Diem was killed in 1964, President Johnson took control of the situation by increasing the amount of money and troops put into Vietnam. After Johnson escalated the manpower in Vietnam, the North Vietnamese mounted a surprise strike known as the Tet Offensive, and made it very aware that they were capable of guerrilla warfare.
