Violence against women is a growing problem in our society now more than ever. Too Sexy for My Shirt , By Debra Dickerson, and Battering: Who’s Going to Stop it?, By Ann Jones, are two essays that dig deeper into the issues of harassment and abuse directed towards women of all ages. Both authors make it a point to revolve their theses around the message that these acts towards women are a serious matter. They draw the reader’s attention by constructing their essay’s in different but effective ways.

reader starts to feel sorry for her as she explains how the business man comes over and “accidentally” rubs his penis against her “gorgeous ass” while she waits at the light, Or how when she rejects the catcalls of love by the man in the beat-up Pontiac, she has now become a “fat, fucking skank”. “What is she doing to attract this kind of negative attention?” or “Does she deserve this?” Are questions one might ask when reading this opening paragraph. This is exactly the reaction Debra wants from her readers. She wants the reader to wonder why women ask for this attention and why men think it is okay to act in a vulgar, crude manner. She then interviews other women who live in the D.C. area. After reading the interview with Northwestern University law professor, Cynthia Bowman, the reader realizes the harassment directed to Debra applies to all kinds of women.
