What Are You Eating?

Food is not what it used to be. Our ancestors used to hunt and gather food of all varieties. Today, the typical American diet consists of processed carbohydrates, fats, and sugars. On some of the products we find in a grocery store, the packaging supports significant health claims such as high in vitamins and minerals, and low in fat. However, are those claims justified? In his book, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto, Michael Pollan questions the obsession Americans have with nutrition, and suggests that people return to a more simplistic approach to food and eating. following can lead to many health complications in a person's lifetime. Even though most of us Americans try to eat right, we may end up consuming food that has been tampered with. It is up to us to stop focusing on nutritionism and to start eating whole foods and get fit.
A key problem with society today is our complete focus on nutritionism. Michael Pollan defines nutritionism as the process of "adjusting various nutrients (lowering the fat, boosting the protein) and fortifying processed foods rather than questioning their value in the first place." (Pollan 72) Vast majorities of Americans do not realize it, but the food they are really eating contains processed sugars and carbohydrates, and little to no nutrients. One example of this type of food is margarine. Pollan states:
