Who am I?

It depends on who you ask. If you ask my mom, she will tell you that I am her built-in best friend, that I am someone she sees herself in. If you ask my friends, they’ll tell you that I am an ambivert, that my mood will always affect others around me, and they’ll tell you that I am funny but that I am unpredictable. If you ask my teachers, they’ll tell you that I am smart but lazy sometimes. But if you ask me who I am, I don’t think I would have an answer to that question. As the years have gone by, I’ve asked myself this question many times: Who am I?

I started hating myself for the color of my skin and the texture of my hair, asking myself why I was the way I was, why wasn’t I like the Korean girls at my school, why my hair wasn’t as soft as theirs, and why weren’t my parents a little lighter. But as the years went by, I understood that even if black people weren’t necessarily slaves anymore, we were slaves in our own minds. After that revelation, I began to see things in a new light once again. I understood the beauty in my features and in the color of my chocolate skin. I learned how to cherish what God has given me. I have embraced my hair by trying new hairstyles that work for my type of curls. I have been enjoying how versatile my hair is, which allows me to be creative and express myself through my crown.
