The land-grant university, the National Academy of Sciences and the Carnegie libraries.

The library system has and is phasing changes mainly due to the move into a more digital world. Until recently four of the six largest America publishing houses did not lend digital books to libraries and during the past 20 years more than 1300 employees have lost their job at Library of Congress.

But changes and challenges can of course also be very positive for innovations, like the start of new projects. One of the most interesting one is the project that aim to create a new World Digital Library with 145 institutions worldwide.

The NYPL want to keep more computers to the people, while scholars and writers want to maintain space for research. Even though society is changing both economic and political, it is important that the possibility to get education in the public libraries can be maintained.
