Recently, while flipping through the pages of the latest issue of Cosmopolitan, I came across an extremely interesting opinion poll on women entering the male dominated world of professional boxing. The article asked various women if, “The Fairer Sex Has Gotten Too Fierce?” Many different women said many different things, yet most of them were probably unaware of the fact that they were raised and socialized to think the way that they do. These women did not realize that from the time they are born they are taught to believe that they are a part of the weaker and inherently less aggressive sex. and their being perceived as the less aggressive sex. For example, when men act in an aggressive manner, most people just write off their actions as an expected part of their being male. Yet, if women demonstrate the exact same aggressive behavior, they are viewed ads being “manly” or acting out of line. “However, in studies using tests to gauge feeling of aggression, no differences between males and females have been found.” This proves that women are no less inherently aggressive than men.
So, what does this have to do with women and professional boxing? One woman in the Cosmopolitan poll answered, “I think that women who try to be as aggressive as men end up blurring the gender distinctions that make life interesting.” Obviously, this woman is oblivious to the research of Fred Mathews. Otherwise, she would know that women and men are equally aggressive and that “gender distinctions” are much less distinct than previously thought. I must say that I agree with the women ...
