Wuthering Heights: Friendship or Passion - The Chemistry Between Heathcliff
Friendship between two friends shows that they can trust and help
one another. Passion, on the other hand, is a strong affection between two
lovers. In Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte is most interested in the
spiritual feelings of her two main characters, Heathcliff and Catherine
Earnshaw. The feeling that Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff has for each
other is passion. The two began as friends and later realize they are the
missing parts to one another. The feeling Cathy feels for her real husband,
Edgar Linton, is that Edgar is only a part of her superficial love. It is

told the maid Edgar proposed to her. “You love Mr. Edgar, because he is
handsome, and young, and cheerful, and rich, and loves you.”1 (Pg 80)
Catherine later admits her true love for Heathcliff and how Edgar never was
a match for her.

“That will do to explain my secret, as well as the other. I've
no more business to marry Edgar Linton than I have to be in
heaven; and if the wicked man in there had not brought
Heathcliff so low, I shouldn't have thought of it. It would
degrade me to marry Heathcliff now; so he shall never know
how I love him: and that, not because he's handsome, Nelly,
but because he's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls
are made of, his and mine are the same; and Linton's is as
different as a moonbeam from lightning, or frost from fire.”
