The story of "Zaabalawi" written by Naguib Mahfous, takes us on a journey with the narrator in search of the healing powers possessed by the saint Zaabalawi. Throughout this pilgrimage the narrator, who has an illness of no known cure, seeks this Zaabalawi in hopes that he can relieve his pain and suffering. The author uses the image of a all wise, all loving Zaabalawi as a symbol of hope and faith that keeps the narrator searching for the truth and a cure from miracles that only a saint could conjure.

During this trek for truth the narrator came into contact with several individuals ranging in social status from town commons to the Sheikh of the district, educated men such as lawyers, artists, and musicians, and many local shop tenders. Many of these individuals were in touch with the faith that was beginning to grow in the narrator, understanding the desire and thirst to know this man of miracles. Many also ridiculed Zaabalawi, "openly made fun of him, labelled him a charlatan, and advised me to put myself in the hands of a doctor" (801), thinking he was a quack, a fraud and phoney.
Several times during the journey to find this man Zaabalawi, the narrator finds himself at dead end leads and no other paths to search for the relief that his body and mind are in dire need of.
