The majority of electricity used in the United States today comes from burning coal. Coal costs a penny a pound, and the nation has enough coal in its earth to last several hundred years (2). One of the reasons that energy produced from coal is cheaper than renewable energy is because consumers do not pay the full cost of the coal energy production. Mining coal from within the earth is an energy and labor-intensive process that puts the health of the miners and the environment at risk. Over the past 25 years, coal mining has disturbed nearly two million acres of land, only half of which has been reclaimed to minimal environmental standards (2). The $28 billion a year coal industry receives an estimated $8 billion in taxpayer subsidies annually (1).
