There I was- sitting in a white, bright, hospital waiting room. At 5 in the morning. On my 7th birthday. I was tired, anxious, excited, angry and worried. Tired? For obvious reasons. Anxious and excited? Because my mom was about to have another child. Angry and worried? Because my mom was about to have another child. I had been the baby a good 7 years of my life, and I was not ready to give that up just yet. I began to think about all I was going to have to share with him- time, attention, my toys, and even my BIRTHDAY? Really?

Looking back now, I can’t believe how wrong I was to think that being a big sister would be so awful, because now, that obnoxious little brother has ironically been a major source of inspiration to help me realize what I want to do with m life. Although I was bitter in the beginning, the first time I held Benjamin, I felt a little piece of my jealousy fade away. Knowing that he was completely dependent on me to hold him up, to help him, made me want to help him more. I knew then that he was not just ‘some baby’ or my ‘mom’s son’… he was my little brother.
