Another important researcher that put forth information on bipolar disorder is Jules Falret. In 1854, he coined the term “folie circulaire” (circular insanity). He also established a connection between depression and suicide. Falret noticed that this only occurred in certain families which gave a hint to researchers that this illness could have a genetic link. His research eventually led to the term bipolar disorder because he was able to find a distinction between moments of depression and heightened moods. After years of research, in 1875 this disorder was finally given the name Manic- Depressive Psychosis. It was then known as a psychiatric disorder.
