Caregivers


Everyday, for the past five years, I have been caring for a very special person in my life. That person is my mother. I must say this is, by far, the most important yet most challenging job I have ever acquired. My mother suffered a massive stroke which left her in debilitating state. She cannot talk, walk, eat or do anything for herself. I assist her with all of her physical activities, such as using the bathroom, showering, exercising, feeding, and her daily medicine intake. In addition, I provide emotional, financial, and legal support as well as spiritual enrichment. I am what Americans call a “Caregiver”.

A caregiver is more than just the person’s nurse, they are also that person’s advocate. Throughout the impaired person’s illness, the work of a caregiver is largely concerned with watching and problem solving. One must learn as much as they can about the illness and about the needs, feelings, and reactions of the impaired person to become an accurate observer and effective problem-solver.
