Before the rise of nations and states there were massive civilizations. Ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, South America, Europe, and China were the result of many factors. These places had culture, technology, science, language, art and agriculture that allowed them to advance.
Before these civilizations emerged, people were nomadic. Hunters and gatherers meandered from place to place fallowing food supply along with seasonal changes. What caused the leap from nomads to complex societies, were river valleys. River valleys supply the land with nutrient-rich soil, which is good for farming. When people weren’t entirely focused on finding food due to farming, they were able to create more complex cultures. An abundance food lead to a more diverse range in human activities. All civilizations have some form of religion, art, language, records, goods and scientific achievements that defined them.
Since a number of people did not have access to everything they needed they had to trade. A common trading place lead to the development of cities. Trading caused different types for people to mingle and spread ideas. Diffusion lead to knowledge of other cultures and languages.
Large numbers of people caused governments to form. In tribal communities or smaller groups, positions of power were relatively simple. You had a tribal leader with a 2nd in command who took care and watched over a small group. In smaller communities, tribal leaders had respect and power.
