Recent research studies are suggesting that mental health problems among students are becoming more widespread and more severe. According to Kate Coxon, "A recent survey from the Association of University and College Counsellors shows that the proportion of students with serious or severe mental illness has risen substantially over the last few years in some sectors of higher education. The mental health of students is thought to be worse than that of the general population: some studies estimate that 30% to 50% of students suffer from varying levels of anxiety and ...

such as competition for grades, the need to perform, relationships, fear of AIDS, career choice and financial pressure can cause stress. Stress manifests itself in physiological and emotional ways, both of which are detrimental to the performance and success of the student. Some of the cognitive or emotional responses include negative self-talk, inability to concentrate, forgetfulness, restlessness, irritability, mood swings and feeling overwhelmed. Physiological responses include muscular tension, colds and other illnesses, high blood pressure, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, headaches and indigestion. Anxiety is also becoming more and more prevalent among students as a reaction to stress. Although mild anxiety may even be seen as advantageous, severe anxiety have the added effects of reducing concentration and weakening the learning process.
