Critical Lens in Waiting for Godot

Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” is a play that lacks one true meaning. The use of language and meaning not only contradict each other, but also allow the play to be interpreted in different ways. The absurd language of the characters and the repetition of a sense of waiting are explored in most scenes through an analytical approach. The play can be viewed through a Post- Structuralism lens.
The two main characters of the play, Vladimir and Estragon, are static characters. They are sitting by a tree, waiting for Godot to come to them. Vladimir is the more responsible of the two, while Estragon is more helpless and needs the protection of Vladimir. The dialogue between these two ...

are just one long sentence, but they have no relation to each other. “Given the existence as uttered forth in the public workers of Puncher and Wattmann of a personal God quaquaquaqua…flying gliding golf over nine and eighteen holes tennis of all sorts…” (45-46). This type of dialogue gives the characters a quality of insanity. The play also contradicts itself. Certain events, such as the visit of Pozzo and Lucky, occur but Vladimir and Estragon can’t even remember it.
Because of the absurdity and insanity of this play, the reader is left to determine a meaning on their own. There is no one right answer as to what the meaning behind the play is. Your own interpretation could be based on the situations in your own life. The repetitiveness of waiting, to me, represents the idea that there is always something better than what we have.
