Is democracy the best form of government? President Lincoln thought so in his 1863 Gettysburg Address where he defined the kind of society he wanted the United States to preserve: “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Lincoln was describing an ideal form of government which did not exist at that time. It was based on the concept that all human beings are created equal and are given certain rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The word democracy is derived from two Greek words: demos, meaning “the people,” and kratos, meaning “rule”. Democracy is a way of governing in which the citizens are in complete control of it’s own affairs. ...

The only way a for a government to be a true democracy, there must be certain kinds of equality in society. The four most well-known are equality of rights, suffrage, schooling, and justice. The equality of rights means that “all men are created equal”. This being true, all people have the same natural rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Suffrage is the most basic right because it is the main safeguard of democracy. All citizens should have the right to vote there are no exclusions on the basis of race or ethnicity, sex, religion, or economic status. “The State should require and compel the education, up to a certain standard, of every human being who is born its citizen.”(Mill 47) If education is not at a certain standard then democracy is going to be stagnant.
