Many psychologists have determined that the middle aged years occur between 30 and 60 years of age. The main sign that a person has reached middle age is usually indicated by a reassessment of one's life. This is referred to as a "midlife transition" and can be a time of much turmoil for the individual. Bob Johnson, Ph.D, considers these years to be "the most critical and influential years of one's existence" (n.d.). He considers this time to be one of opportunity and possibilities.

Granted, everyone has things that they regret; most of us regret things we did as well as the things we didn't get to do. After the self-analysis, the person must then have the desire to act upon his new "life plan", and work on accomplishing the goals set for him in his earlier years.
I have interviewed the hospice nurse who tends to my roommate and the neighbor across the hall from me in my apartment complex. Both individuals do not feel older than their respective years; they do not feel that they have had more trials and tribulations in their lives than anyone else.
