Doris Lessing's Life And Her Writings



Doris Lessing was born of British parents in 1919. She grew up in
Rhodesia after moving there when she was only five years old. Lessing has
proven herself as one of the most outspoken and controversial writers of
her time. She is not afraid to touch on subjects that express her
unaccepted views. She is a feminist and has many of her female characters
play as a heroine defeating what most women are afraid to conquer,
inferiority (Scott-Kilvert,184). She writes in what she calls straight,
broad and direct.
Lessing, in many of her stories, has woven much of her own life
experiences into her work. This enables her to tell the story with depth

trying to save a
maize crop from a huge swarm of locusts. Although their crop is ruined,
they are thankful that the swarm of locusts did not settle and lay eggs on
the farm. As a result, Margaret, the wife, who was brought up in the city,
slowly learns to adapt to her harsh yet beautiful surroundings” (Bloom,134).

In the story the main character is Margaret, a city girl is now a
farmer’s wife thrown into a way of life that is all new to her. “Margaret’
s love for her husband opposed to her despair for his future as a farmer”
(Thompson,1258). Her whole style of living has changed. Even though
everything is different, she is doing her best to fit and in and not give
up. Like many of Lessing’s character’s, Margaret shows the need for love
yet does not counteract her desire for self-sufficiency (Fitzgerald,186).
Margaret is determined to survive yet she has no idea of what is heading
