This analytical report is a study on the effects that working shifts, an unsteady work schedule, has on employees. This report will also include a brief history of shift work, some reasons for working shifts, categories of shifts, physical and psychological problems associated with shift work, disasters attributed to shift work, European solutions and alternatives to working of shifts, my personal aspects on the working of shifts, and finally some advantages of working shifts. Working shifts, an unsteady schedule, can present many different problems for the men and women who work them. This report is going to highlight some of these problems, and hopefully offer some possible solutions to minimize them. I am also going to examine some European countries, because they seem to be far ahead of the U.S. in recognizing and dealing with the problems associated with shift work.
Examined will be safety, physical, and production problems facing both employers and employees. I myself have worked shifts for the last ten years, so hopefully I can provide some personal insight. A questionnaire, which I distributed to a variety of my co-workers who also work shifts, will also be included.

Categories of Shifts
Shift work can be broken down into five categories. The first category is called "the continuous three shifts." It covers twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Generally this entails three different shifts who work 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m., and 12:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. Steel mills and hospitals are good examples of the "continuous three shifts" (Schor 145).
