Ours was a huge graduating class of about 1000 students. The ceremony was held inside the auditorium, even though it was a sunny day, because there simply was no room for us anywhere else. As I looked around me, I noticed how diverse the high school was: I don't think any one racial or ethnic group was in the majority. I stood in line, for we were in alphabetical order, and the ten people in front of me and the ten people behind me represented the various nationalities, races, and social classes of the entire graduating class. make it evident what nationalities their parents were, and I assumed they were of mixed European descent. Of the non-white students, about one-third was African-American, about two-thirds were Hispanic, and only a handful of students were Asian-American. As with the Caucasian students, the Hispanic kids were also of various nationalities, from South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Of the Asian-American students, two were East Indian and one was East Asian.
The main thing I remember was that each visibly distinct ethnic group tended to conglomerate. Many had friends only within their ethnic group. Rarely did any of the groups interact, except when we had to for classroom assignments. Furthermore, behavior in the classroom was determined by ethnicity. Because the teacher was white, it seemed that mostly the white kids would answer questions and speak out.
