Eveline

The choices and decisions people make sculpt who they will become in the future. The past could be holding people back from making a better future for themselves. In the story “Eveline” this point is very relevant. Eveline needs to let go of her past to have a better future. This isn’t as easy as it seems, there is a lot of factors that are holding Eveline back from being able to live her own life. Eveline was torn between being unhappy at home or taking a chance and moving to Buenos Ayres to marry a man she just meant, leaving behind all her most cherished memories. can’t move on with her future because she refuses to let go of her past. There are many reasons she can’t let go of her past. She meets a man named frank who is madly in love with her. He is a sailor and wants to bring her back to Buenos Ayres with him. This seems like Evelines big chance to move on with her life and make herself happy. There is nothing for her left in the town except an abusive father and her memories. When it comes time for Eveline to make her decision to go with frank and start a life for herself she decides to stay at home. “Then she would be married--she, Eveline. People would treat her with respect then. She would not be treated as her mother had been”, she finally gets the chance to be who she has dreamt she would one day be but passes it all up.
