Eveline exudes many qualities that are extremely admirable. She is extremely positive throughout troubled times. Eveline also maintains strength when certain events would weaken the average person. The main character exudes many qualities of being a courageous and positive young woman. These are among the many reasons that she is essentially the best character in the various stories read. Eveline is extremely strong considering her situation. In the face of adversity, Eveline tries to keep a promise to her mother. Although the situation would warrant an attitude of pessimism Eveline maintains an optimistic view of each situation. The father is an abusive alcoholic who Eveline feels is threatening. Treatment programs are not available for Eveline’s father to receive help for his drinking or abuse. Therefore, Eveline must maintain an optimistic outlook on her life. To illustrate Eveline’s view on her family life she thinks of all the positive and thoughtful things her father has done. For instance, Eveline recalls the time when she was ill and her father made her a snack and told her a story. Eveline tries to make a difficult situation better by retelling the good qualities of her father and family life.
