FM Alexander's Directions

Allow the neck to be free in order for the head to go forward and up in order for the back to lengthen and widen in order for the knees to release forward and away in order for the elbows to release out and away. with my nerdy and nervous character, I first made myself effortlessly upright, which is becoming a heck of a lot easier. I guess practice does really make perfect. My next step was softening my neck and rolling my head down and forward in space. I did my best to allow my body to follow. I felt my chest move down as well and my knees buckled. It really lent itself to the character and the response from Mary-Ellen I got was “Wow, what made you do that?” It also did something miraculous for my support higher notes. I got up to a b flat, which is not a even a note I can hit on a good day. I was highly excited and I’m still trying to find a way to apply that to my regular notes.
The stronger character was a bit of a bigger challenge. I have the tendency to have a high gaze when I put my chest out. So I worked on my head down when I put my chest out.
