leaving the house was a shawl or jacket, gloves or mitts, a button up boot, bonnet or hat, bag or purse, a handkerchief, a fan made of sandalwood, and a watch pocket. Women were also required to wear gloves. Pure white gloves were required for church or dancing and the only time that they were allowed to take them off is when they were eating. They were never allowed to wear make up and the only jewelry that they were allowed was hair clips. Hair clips were allowed because it was a sign of a loved one that died. Women also had to have their hair worn up or covered up in public.
Young girls and boys often dressed like their mothers and fathers when going out to something fancy or doing daily hard labor.
