In Chekhov's Gooseberries, the story is divided into two layers: the first layer uses the third person point-of-view, and the second layer begins when Ivan Ivanovitch says "I meant to tell you about my brother."(p.203, line27) It confused me when reading the preceding paragraphs since these characters appear without much introduced and described. Yet while reading this story, I found some relevance and comparison between these two layers.

First I would like to discuss an unremarkable character. With her silence and few scenes, Alehin's maid Pelagea seemed to be a dispensable role, but she has certain functions. ...

gooseberries, shows the desire and achievement of Nicolay. Since he worked in a government office, he had dreamed about having an estate which must have gooseberries which is indispensible in Nicolay's idyllic life. Gooseberries symbolize Nicolay's strong desire of having his own estate, his ideal land. Though later he bought a land without gooseberries, he insisted it and ordered some as his achievement. Gooseberries Nicolay treated Ivan should be red and sweet instead of being unripe and sour. Yet Nicolay enjoyed them that I found his self-deception. These unripe fruits shows Nicolay's "fake achievement". The desire became an obsession make him only cared about the external things but not the essence of things. Those sour gooseberries can also be a prediction to his life, just as what Ivan narrates, "that however happy he may be,..., trouble will come for him -- disease, poverty, losses."
