Halloween has become nothing more than jack o’ lanterns, trick or treating, and costumes. Most of us have come to believe that it is nothing more than an excuse to dress up and get intoxicated. Yet we don’t know that Halloween is an ancient ritual, much like The Day of The dead, brought by generations of immigrants and celebrated today. Though The Day of The Dead is a Spanish ritual celebrated by many South American countries, honoring the dead by using skulls. It was said that around this time of year “on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred” (Ancient Origins). Resulting in a door for spirits where the deceased could travel free amongst the living causing chaos. The Aztec civilization also believed that spirits of the dead could come and visit the living on their holiday. Unlike the Celtics, “the Aztec did not fear death they embraced it”(Day of The Dead).
In time the Romans took over parts of Celtic territory. Eventually two festivals came to be that were combine with the Romans and the Celtics. Feralia was the festival where the people would honor the dead. The other festival was to remember the goddess of fruit and trees, that the Romans, called Pomona.
