I don't really do that much science, per se. On the other hand, we're always developing new surgical procedures for treating various problems and that involves long-term studies of efficacy and safety and so forth that can take a few years to evaluate the results of ongoing studies involving hundreds of patients. In that sense, we're always "doing science", but it's probably closest to structural engineering.


5. Which role of a physician scientist would you like to be?

Well, I've already chosen a very "hands-on" specialty, so I'm more of a technician than a scientist. Basically, I solve about the same types of thing that a car mechanic or a structural engineer does, but more precisely, and with much less room for error. Obviously, there are medical aspects of working on someone's knee that a mechanic doesn't have to worry about, but in many respects, it's similar in principal. the rest really wasn't too difficult, because it was more "hands-on" than so much purely "academic".


9. Which course do you think you use the least?


That's the irony right there. The stuff I use the least is the chemistry that was most difficult. I can't remember the last time I had to perform integrations or calculate a volume of revolution, either.
