This quote means that if they’re two people in an argument you can’t go for both of them because you will lose their trust. You can’t stay on two side of anything that’s going on because you’ll lose. You can not take anyone’s side because you will end up hurting yourself. If you take both sides of an argument they will then turn it on to you.
