Fried, Hemmens and Bennet all agree that many citizens were in support of the curfew law but found that, even though crime dropped during curfew hours, it increased in the afternoon (Hemmens and Bennett 103; Fried 137). It is still unclear if the curfews set in place contributed to a reduction in the night time crime rates.
According to Hemmens and Bennett, “Nationally, violent crimes committed by juveniles are most frequent between the hours of 3pm and 4pm, and approximately 33 percent of all juvenile violent crime takes place between 3pm and 7pm” (103). I concur that most of the crimes committed by the youth happened in the daytime. You turn on the news and you hear about all these kids that take guns to school or shoot up the school and some even take drugs into the school. If juveniles want to commit a crime they will do it no matter what cause the penalties for doing so are not that drastic as they are for adults. Hemmens, Bennet, Fried and O’Neil all agree on that the penalties are not that bad. It could result in a warning, community service, fines, and in more serious cases, hold the parents responsible (Fried 129; Hemmens and Bennett 102; O’Neil 54).
