A number of approaches to the issue of leadership have been considered during the last century or so and some of these are reviewed below.

Great Man Theory

There was a heavy emphasis in the early part of the last century on what makes a good leader the so called “ great man theory” when commentators sought to identify all the traits required for leader in order to be able to identify who should be selected to be the leaders. As the lists of required traits grew longer and so the reality that a number of great leaders have undesirable traits became clear and the study of leadership began to focus on how leaders behave and what they do.
