Maturity Using Kipling

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) had well developed and thought-out view on maturity. He displays this universal understanding in his poem “If –” in which he describes several qualities in a very straight forward way. Most anyone could probably find qualities they agree with if not agreeing with all of them. The most potent traits of maturity are: being able to continue through rough times, even when hope seems lost; staying true to yourself in all situations – whether it’s resisting the corruption of power or refusing to conform to society; striving for excellence to better the world all-around in a lasting way; and lastly, maturity means withstanding pressure of seeming insanity and endless ...

The immature teen will simply brood over the loss and become bitter.
A mature teen would also be one who, if s/he has chosen to be abstinent before, will remain so even under the pressure of their friends. Nor will this person look down upon his/her friends. “If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,/Or walk with kings – nor lose the common touch” (ln 25-26) means that the only thing that will change who you are is you. It means that you stand by your choices. You neither scold people less fortunate/different, nor do you lower yourself or lose your values simply to fit in with everyone else.
Good morals often let people leave a good impression. The ideas of the person continue long after s/he has passed on from this life.
