Mount St. Helens Eruption: The History, Lead up, the Event and the Aftermath

Abstract

The Eruption of Mt. Helens was the worst volcanic eruption in United States history. In this paper, I'll talk about the history of Mount St. Helens. I'll also talk about the surrounding areas leading up to the eruption and eruption and its impacts to its surrounding area and how it was not all just a disaster; with some species surviving and thriving today. I was lucky enough to be able to visit Mt. St. Helens back in 2010, so I'll also talk about my experience and tie that into the paper.

the first time in modern recording history of the Mount St. Helens that it had an active lava dome flowing upwards or else the earthquakes would have not occurred. The eruption on March 27 was a false alarm compared to what was brewing later in May.

History: Pre 1980

Mount St. Helens is an active Stratovolcano located in Washington State. The volcano is situated in the lower left hand corner of Washington State. It's only around one hundred miles from the Pacific coast. The explorer who discovered and named the Mountain was George Vancouver. George Vancouver was an explorer who discovered the cascade mountain range. According to USGS, "He named it in honor of a fellow countryman, Alleyne Fitzherbert, who held the title Baron St. Helens and who was at the time the British Ambassador to Spain".
