She was taken to the hospital and shackled by foot to the bed. After being discharged 10 days later she was taken to the Middlesex jail for men and was placed in solitary confinement for 3 months.
She was not being fed properly so her lawyers initiated a lawsuit against the state of New Jersey for medical maltreatment and dietary abuse.
When she arrived at Riker's Island she was malnourished and anemic. She was placed on the pregnancy diet until she gave birth.
She went into labor the morning of September 10, 1974, at 4 a.m. on 2 Main at Rikers, where she had been kept in the psycho ward.
