Salamandastron
, the mountain of the fire lizard, has been ruled by warrior badger Lords for ages. The mountain stands on the seashore, a fired sentinel guarding the coast against cruel searat invasions. Nevertheless, when Fherago the Assassin comes from inland and decides to take over the mountain, it’s all Lord Urthstripe the Strong and his fighting hares can do to stay alive.
It's also no comfort to Urthstripe that Mara, a young badger maid he adopted, has run off several times to see her friend Klitch. What Mara does not know, is that Klitch is actually the scheming son of the wicked Fherago!
After Mara leaves the mountain for good; the Assassin makes his move, and surrounds , demanding surrender. ...

Meanwhile, at the massive Redwall Abbey, two searats have come to stay. The brothers and sisters think they will only bring trouble, but the Abbess is slow to turn any creatures away from their gates. The searats, Dingeye and Thura, turn out to be more trouble than they are worth. They accidentally murder one of the abbey's brothers, steal the great sword of Martin the Warrior, and high tail it out of the abbey leaving the deadly Dryditch fever behind to prey on the abbey dwellers.
Two young ones, Samkin a squirrel and Arula a molemaid, set out to retrieve the sword.
